Health Record Research Request (R3)

The Health Record Research Request (R3) team is committed to ensuring the proficient use of UPMC clinical data and systems for research. The CTO collaborates with R3 under the Chief Research Informatics Officer (Research Informatics Office) to efficiently drive cohort discovery, feasibility, and use of UPMC clinical data and clinical systems for Clinical Trials.

R3’s key responsibilities include accessing and provisioning data from UPMC Electronic Health Records and related systems, including discrete data both inpatient and outpatient such as patient demographics, visits, diagnoses, laboratory tests, medications, procedures, as well as clinical imaging, clinical note text, and some genomic data.

Through advanced technical capabilities, ongoing training as HIPAA Honest Brokers, project management, and deep coordination on behalf of UPMC Health Services Division and Health Plan, R3 supports investigators in use of UPMC clinical data and UPMC systems for research such as EHR data provisioning and HIPAA de-identification, customized EHR alerts, and trials of clinical decision supports. R3 is supported via external grants and modest chargebacks to individual investigator teams to cover services provided.
